What is a Setup?

It’s a little like a service for your car but it goes further than that.

A Setup involves cutting the nut slots properly for good playability, adjusting the neck (truss rod) saddle/string height (action) & intonation (where adjustable) to make your guitar play as in tune all the way up the neck & as easily as possible. On electrics I will also adjust pickup heights to give you the best tone & balance between them.

My setup also finishing off things properly that the manufacturers cut corners on like finishing fret ends which are often left sharp. This is not just necessary for cheap guitars, even expensive USA made instruments often miss out on the fine details in the factory environment where time is money & the clock is ticking.

Guitars are also affected by temperature & humidity & settings can shift considerably during their travel from a factory on the other side of the world. Guitar magazines often recommend having your guitar set up once a year as things can slowly drift without you noticing. Believe it or not in places like America where they have a bigger difference between winter & summer climate they may have to have it done twice a year to compensate for the seasons!
